Dog training
Training your dog is essential for safe and responsible access to Scotland's beautiful outdoors. A well-trained dog not only ensures a more enjoyable experience for you but also helps protect wildlife, livestock and other outdoor users. Whether you're walking in local parks or exploring remote hills, your dog needs to respond reliably to basic commands and show good recall - particularly during sensitive times like ground-nesting bird season or when near farm animals.
When you are enjoying the outdoors, you must follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and this includes keeping dogs under proper control. This might mean using a lead in certain situations and ensuring your dog returns promptly when called. Proper training helps prevent incidents with other dogs, reduces disturbance to wildlife, and builds confidence for both you and your pet.
To help you get started with training your dog, The Kennel Club offers comprehensive resources including training guides, videos, and information about local training classes.
